Orange County, CA. Every generation thinks it invented the protest as an avenue to speak truth to power. In the wake of the current student unrest, this poignant novel, Love and Protest, highlights the motivation of ordinary people getting involved and having their voices heard. Indie author Nancy Klann-Moren returns to the theme of social activism. Just as she did in her award-winning novel The Clock Of Life, Klann-Moren intertwines two unsettling chapters of our history into the narrative. In Love and Protest, these chapters are the Anti-Vietnam War movement and the Black Lives Matter movement, creating a compelling and thought-provoking story.

Klann-Moren says, “Coming of age in a time of political unrest is complex, and I hope this book encourages the reader to think about the strength of involvement and the belief in something worth fighting for.” One of her favorite lines from the story is, “Always remember, the activists are the shining lights of our democracy. They expose the dark corners of government and power.”

Advance praise has been pouring in. “LOVE AND PROTEST is a heartfelt story of young love blooming amidst the tragedies and triumphs of the Vietnam Anti-war Movement, juxtaposed against a heartbreaking coming-of-age tale that unfolds in a more recent, far more contentious time and place, where ignorance and idealism, brutality and naiveté collide with consequences both gratifying and touching. This is a work of great depth and honesty, and one that is certain to stir readers.”—Baron Birtcher,  LA Times Bestseller, and award-winning author of Knife River.

Blurb: While wandering through the Second Chance Thrift Shop, 17-year-old Harper Warner finds a diary tucked in a nightstand drawer. The original owner, Libby Carlson, had chronicled her “Summer of Love” in San Francisco and her involvement in the Anti-Vietnam War Movement 52 years earlier.

Harper is certain her recently deceased mother arranged the discovery, and she gives the find special import. The diary entries help Harper cope with her loss and motivate her to become involved in something larger than herself. After deciding her cause would be the Black Lives Matter movement, COVID-19 unexpectedly upends her plans, until the George Floyd murder.

Separated by generations, Harper and Liberty’s passions and missteps are intertwined as they come of age and find their individual paths toward activism, with a unique twist. Nancy Klann-Moren’s writing journey began with short stories as a creative outlet. Some of those stories have garnered publication in anthologies. Eleven are published in her short story collection, Like The Flies On The Patio.

One day in a writing class, the teacher mentioned one of her short stories should be a novel. After a year of procrastination, she began writing The Clock Of Life. It has garnered awards from Writers Digest, Next Generation Indie Book Awards, Readers Favorite Book Awards, and Kindle Book Awards. It’s a BRAG Honoree and an Awesome Indies AIA Recipient.
